Members In Action

Members from Michigan teamed up to collect, seal and dispose of hazardous pharmaceuticals.Rx: Cleanup - A prescription for change begins at home.

This year on Earth Day, more than 150 members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP) joined with community members from area churches and other houses of worship to do the earth a favor. At this third annual Earth Keeper Clean Sweep event, thousands of participants safely disposed of unwanted or unused pharmaceuticals.

Earth Keeper, an interfaith organization founded in 2004, seeks to educate UP residents about the environment and how hazardous materials can contaminate lakes and drinking water.

Thrivent Financial lent support through a $15,000 Regional Awareness Building grant for the 2007 Pharmaceutical Clean Sweep. This is in addition to $5,000 worth of Care in Regions dollars for the 2006 Clean Sweep as well as a $75,000 Youth Initiative grant to Lutheran Campus Ministry at Northern Michigan University for starting a student chapter of Earth Keeper.

Members from the Western, Central and Eastern UP Thrivent chapters gathered $500,000 worth of narcotics in three hours under the supervision of a police officer and a pharmacist. “A minimum of 10 volunteers per site helped people sign in and gather prescription pharmaceuticals,” says Dave Huckstep, Lutheran community services specialist for Thrivent Financial’s Northwoods of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Regional Financial Office. The controlled substances were then transported to an EPA-approved incinerator in St. Louis and safely burned.

For information on disposing hazardous materials in your area, contact your local government or waste management system.
